Cochran, Hassett named AMS fellows

Two professors in the Department of Mathematics are among the 50 mathematical scientists from around the world who have been named fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for 2014: Tim Cochran and Brendan Hassett.

The designation as an AMS fellow recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and use of mathematics. The fellows program is intended to create an enlarged class of mathematicians recognized by their peers as being distinguished for the contributions to the profession and to honor excellence.

Cochran was chosen for his contributions to low-dimensional topology, specifically knot and link concordance, and for mentoring numerous junior mathematicians. He has been a member of the Rice faculty since 1990.

Hassett, who is chair of Rice’s Department of Mathematics, was selected for his contributions to higher dimensional arithmetic geometry and birational geometry. He joined the Rice faculty in 2000.
